Beartooth Wilderness

beartooth1The Beartooth Mountains are known for their remote peaks, high plateaus, and surprise storms. Many of the summits and routes rarely see more than a handful of ascents each year. This is truly an alpine wilderness.

The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, with over half a million acres, is one of the lower 48’s largest contiguous wilderness areas. Much of the eastern Beartooth Range around Red Lodge is within this wilderness, and contains not only numerous 11-12,000’ peaks, but also hundreds of lakes, deep canyons, abundant wildlife, and plentiful berries to pick!

For technical-peak ascents, we ask participants without technical climbing experience or in need of a refresher to take a climbing class. On five day or longer trips we can build time into the trip to go over skills. For shorter trips we offer classes in Cody the day before we start into the mountains.

Season For optimal weather and travel conditions, July and August are the best months to plan a trip to the Beartooths. However, excellent conditions can also prevail in late June and September.
