Lander
Lander is
the hot place for rock climbing in Wyoming. With three rock types in Sinks Canyon, miles of limestone at Wild Iris, and the granite islands rising from the sagebrush sea at Sweetwater Rocks, the climbing in the Lander area has it all! A plethora of world-class sport climbs, ranging from 5.7 to 5.13 test pieces, are found on the limestone crags of Sinks and Wild Iris. Superb crack climbing can be found on the granite and sandstone of Sinks Canyon, while the domes of Split Rock and Lankin Dome offer outstanding moderate multipitch and toproping routes in a remote, beautiful setting. Great bouldering is found everywhere. As the Lander Rock guidebook says, “a lifetime of toil and fun awaits on these challenging lumps of stone, get going”!
Sinks CanyonThis area is home to a wide variety of rock climbs, and is suitable for all ages and abilities. Beginners can learn to climb on some of the moderate routes on the Granite Buttress; the limestone boulders are also really fun. People who want to refine their technique will enjoy the crimpers and pockets of the dolomitic limestone, where climbs range from moderate to . . .well as difficult as they get! There are multi-pitch crack climbs on the sandstone, such as the classic Gunky, 5.8. The canyon is a beautiful oasis in the foothills, through which the Popo Agie (pronounced poh-poh-szhah) River runs, and well worth a visit.
Wild IrisThis superb sport climbing area is south of Lander on the Shoshone National Forest. The white bands of limestone are filled with pockets that will tire the fingers and work the toes. A summertime crag, it offers not only great climbing but gorgeous flowers and beautiful views of the Wind River Range and South Pass. There are climbs for everyone here.
Sweetwater RocksOften referred to as Split Rock, these granite domes are best known for their quality multi-pitch face and crack climbs, but provide excellent toproping and one pitch climbs as well. Set miles from any town, these outcroppings offer the genuine feeling of wilderness. In fact, several areas here, including Split Rock and Lankin Dome, are Wilderness Study areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management. These rocks are recommended for day climbs from Lander, and for multi-day wilderness climbing experiences for groups.
