Collins Establishes New Route
Two of the Tetons' most accomplished guides, Greg Collins and Hans Johnstone, have opened the first ascent of a classic new route in memory of their late friend and climbing partner, Doug Coombs. Do it for Doug, III 5.10b, is a must do summer rock climb; the 5 pitch wall has excellent protection, fantastic rock and wildly enjoyable movement. It is "just as Doug would want it", says Johnstone. "The route is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face".
Located on Rocksprings Buttress near the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort ski area, the route takes aretes, corners, and face up the tall central section of the buttress. Do It For Doug is to the left of the Collins and McBride 2005 route Grand Central III 5.12 b, and adds another classic line to this superb climbing area.
Johnstone and Collins have paired up to climb many of the Tetons' hardest and most classic new routes, including the Grand Teton's most difficult free climb, The Golden Pillar V 5.12 as well as Death Canyon's mega-steep Mega Crack III 5.12 and Mt. Moran's South Buttress Houdini. The pair call " Do it for Doug" the funnest route yet!
