Kids/Teens: Teen Alpine Adventure

kids5 Designed for students between the ages of 14 and 17, the Summer Alpine Adventure is ideal for motivated teens with a thirst for adventure and the desire to learn. With a focus on rock climbing and mountaineering, the Alpine Adventure is specifically geared to be a safe, fun, and positive backcountry experience for novice and experienced teens alike. The two-week expedition is designed, among other things, to develop the skills and judgment needed to successfully become a competent mountaineer and rock climber.

Participants need to be capable of traveling to Cody, Wyoming and staying in a motel on the nights before and after the course without supervision. During the course, they will generally be under the supervision of one of their guides. The goal of Jackson Hole Mountain Guides is to give students the instruction and climbing experience needed to become competent all-round climbers and responsible expedition members.

For the ultimate in backcountry experiences, this two-week expedition takes place wholly within the rugged and beautiful Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. From Granite Peak (the highest peak in Montana) to the stunning East Rosebud Canyon, some of the finest climbing and awe inspiring scenery in the region is found here. This area offers the perfect setting for mastering wilderness skills, route finding technique, and objective considerations of mountaineering. Hundreds of trout-filled lakes and crystal streams reflect the walls, spires, and rugged summits that will provide us with matchless mountain days for learning and accomplishment.

The Beartooths are known for their abundant granite outcrops and crags, offering excellent edges, friction climbs and cracks. Students begin with the basics and learn climbing techniques to prepare for the infinite variety of challenges on the rock: cracks, chimneys, face, and friction moves. Students will learn about protection and anchors and become familiar with the technical aspects of climbing. We will emphasize climbing technique and development of the essentials, both psychological and physical, needed for lead-climbing on the "sharp end" of the rope. Modern rope techniques will be mastered, and equipment management and related safety considerations will be covered.

The first climbing days include instruction and practice on shorter crags. In the following days we ascend several significant multi-pitch routes with difficulties of a sustained level. Students will learn how to use an ice axe as a safety tool for ascent and descent, and will master self-arrest to stop a potentially risky slide on hard, steep snow. They will then use their newly acquired skills for taking on the significant mountaineering challenges of the stunning Beartooth range.

Safety
Jackson Hole Mountain Guides is devoted to excellence in climbing and teaching. We present real skills in a safe, unthreatening environment where students learn to use good judgment as well as safe technique. The guide-to-student ratio is limited to four or less, assuring complete and constant feedback, safe, considerate instruction, and ample personal attention. The flexibility of small groups allows us to tailor each day's experience to the students' needs, while maintaining a safe climbing environment.
